Evolving Definition of “Doing”

The Knowles Teacher Initiative Evolution of Doing Resource is a reflection tool that helps educators examine how their notions of what it means to “do” math or science develop over time. Used at the beginning and end of summer and again in the fall and spring, the tool creates a consistent rhythm for surfacing how teachers’ evolving ideas about doing shape the ways they position students as meaningful participants in their classrooms.
The resource can be used individually or with colleagues to build a shared understanding of how a group’s conceptions of doing expand and influence the learning spaces they design. Educators are also invited to use AI as a critical friend to illuminate patterns, perspectives, and blind spots they may not notice on their own.

Whether used individually or collaboratively, the Evolution of Doing Resource supports teachers in articulating and refining their beliefs about what it means to be a doer of math or science and in considering how those beliefs inform the opportunities they create for learners.
