Michael Gonzalez

I want my students to remember that I’m learning from them just as they’re learning from me and that math is a vehicle for precise communication and justice.

Michael’s Story

Teaching Discipline

Mathematics

Why Mathematics

In college, I took an introductory combinatorics class that centered group work and student-driven learning. The course and the instructor painted a new and exciting picture of mathematics, and I found a lot of joy and self-discovery in the creative, artistic, and logical work. The logical basis of math makes sense to my brain, and, as a result, the math classroom is the context where I feel most confident in supporting my students’ growth and access to content.

Professional Experience

Michael has been working as an independent one-on-one tutor for the past ten years. During his undergraduate studies, he served as a teaching assistant, group tutor, and grader for various math and computer science courses. In the summers of 2023 and 2024, Michael taught rising eighth and ninth graders.

Michael will start his first year teaching at Hillsdale High School in the 2024-2025 school year.

Hobbies

Michael enjoys cooking and baking outside the classroom and has a black belt in taekwondo.
